How does Online Therapy (eTherapy) work at PsyShrink

If you would like to have Online Therapy at PsyShrink, you can contact us through our Contact Form here. Before your session takes place, you will be sent the ‘Conditions of Treatment’ from your therapist, which include a plan if there is a technology failure.  You will also receive a link to a webcam session (e.g., Zoom link, Google Chat, Skype or FaceTime). Regardless of the method of communication you choose, we contact you at your scheduled appointment time.  You just need to make sure you have privacy on your side.

The number of Online Therapy sessions you might have is dependent on a number of factors, including the nature of your concern/problem, if you are committed to change, and/or if you feel you are reaching your therapeutic goals or not. Some of our clients only require a single session or two to discuss a specific problem or concern. Other clients have regularly scheduled appointments each week for several months. While there are others who schedule appointments as needed to discuss their concerns, questions and progress when they feel it is necessary.  Therapy is an individual process and differs from person to person.

What are some limitations of Online therapy?

Some forms of Online Therapy require that you be comfortable on the phone or with using a computer. Webcam is is a preferred option, as it allows you to see your therapist and perhaps make a deeper connection. However, you should keep in mind that technologies can fail to function properly at times, and safeguards must be considered to protect your privacy. If other people have access to your computer, the confidentiality of your Online Therapy session may be breached.  So make sure you have privacy on your side and that you are in a space where you can focus on you for the duration of your session.

IMPORTANTLY, Online Therapy is not suited to address all psychological concerns and are considered less intensive treatment options. These forms of therapy should not be used as a form of crisis intervention. If you are in crisis and feel that you are a risk to your self or others, then you need to immediately contact a local authority.
