Most people don’t arrive at therapy because they’ve stopped functioning. In fact, they arrive because they’re still functioning — just barely, and at a cost that’s no longer sustainable.
The fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix. The dread before Monday. The sense of performing competence while quietly running on empty. The guilt of feeling burnt out when, on paper, everything looks fine.
At PsyShrink, we work with international professionals navigating burnout in every form it takes — not just at work, but in relationships, parenting, and the constant logistics of building a life somewhere unfamiliar. Burnout rarely stays contained to one area. More often, it spreads: exhaustion becomes irritability, irritability becomes distance, distance becomes guilt, and the guilt feeds right back into the exhaustion.
What Burnout Actually Looks Like
Burnout shows up differently for everyone. In most cases, however, it follows recognisable patterns — ones we work with every day.
Chronic exhaustion that rest doesn’t touch Not ordinary tiredness — a depletion that persists even after a full night’s sleep or a weekend off. Over time, this kind of exhaustion stops being situational and starts becoming the baseline.
Irritability, numbness, or withdrawal Snapping at a partner over something small. Going quiet instead of engaging. Losing interest in things that used to matter. These are rarely about the thing that triggered them — they’re signs of a nervous system that’s been overdrawn for too long.
The “not doing enough” cycle A persistent sense of falling short, regardless of how much is actually being done. This often tips into low-grade depression, which in turn fuels anxiety about all the ways one might still be failing — and the cycle continues, feeding itself.
Relational strain Burnout doesn’t stay at the office. By the time there’s energy left for a partner, a child, or a friend, there’s often nothing left to give. Left unaddressed, this creates distance in relationships that otherwise have nothing wrong with them.
Physical symptoms with no clear cause Headaches, sleep disruption, tension, gastrointestinal issues — the body keeping score long before the mind admits something’s wrong.
Loss of direction A growing sense of going through the motions — capable, accomplished, and quietly unsure what any of it is for anymore.
How I Work
I have over 25 years of clinical experience supporting international professionals navigating burnout, chronic stress, and the particular pressure of building a career and a life in a country that isn’t your own.
Together, we’ll work to understand what’s actually driving the exhaustion — whether it’s work, relationships, the weight of constant overwhelm, or all three feeding each other — and build a sustainable way forward that fits your real life, not a generic wellness checklist. I draw on evidence-based methodologies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), rather than following a rigid protocol — using what fits the specific person and situation.
Sessions are available online from anywhere in the world, or in-person in Munich.
Why Treatment Matters — and Why Waiting Doesn’t Help
The World Health Organization defines burnout as resulting from “chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.” Left unaddressed, it doesn’t tend to plateau — it tends to spread, into relationships, into mood, into physical health.
A 2017 systematic review of 36 prospective studies, published in PLOS ONE, found that burnout significantly predicts later depression, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other serious physical and psychological conditions. The researchers concluded this “highlight[s] the need for preventive interventions and early identification.”
In other words: the exhaustion you’re feeling now is a signal worth acting on, not waiting out.

Have US Health Insurance?
If you hold a US insurance policy with out-of-network benefits, your sessions may be partially reimbursable. We provide superbills with the documentation your insurer requires. Many of our American clients find that 50–80% of session costs are covered. Ask us about this when you book.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as therapy for depression or anxiety? Not exactly. Burnout is a state of chronic depletion that can lead to depression and anxiety if left untreated — but it isn’t itself a diagnosis. Treatment focuses on identifying and interrupting the pattern before it progresses into something clinical.
What approach do you use? I draw on evidence-based approaches, primarily CBT and ACT, tailored to what’s actually driving the exhaustion for you specifically.
How many sessions will I need? It varies. Some people come for a focused block of sessions to address a specific period of overwhelm. Others work with me over several months. Either way, I’ll give you an honest assessment after the first two sessions — I don’t extend the work unnecessarily.
Can I do sessions if I’m not in Germany? Yes. Online therapy works regardless of where you’re located.
Is this confidential? Yes. What’s discussed in sessions remains confidential, and I’ll explain the specifics before your first session.
